Visual field testing is most frequently utilized to detect early signs of the sight-threatening disease glaucoma. It is believed high eye pressure slowly damages the optic nerve causing damage to peripheral vision. Visual field tests are also useful for detection of central or peripheral retinal disease, side vision loss due to an eyelid drooping, optic nerve disease, and diseases affecting the visual pathways within the brain. People who will benefit from visual field testing are those who:
- Have glaucoma or who have risk factors for glaucoma,
- have central retinal disease,
- have problems with peripheral retinal disease such as retinal detachment,
- had stroke, tumor or other diseases affecting optic nerve’s function.
There are a variety of ways to measure a patient’s field of vision. We offer the most comprehensive testing called Static Visual Field which employs a device with fixed light source and projected white dots within a large white bowl. Each eye is tested separately to avoid mistakes. This test is automated and extremely accurate. Results are printed out and discussed with Dr. Keriotis the same day.
